Class Type Descriptions
A project class typically runs for more than one session, participants provide their own materials, the instructor provides the shop and plans and guides students through creation of a completed item. Depending on the project, a shop would not need a set of tools for each student as long as students can be working on different parts of the project at the same time on different tools. A project class can also be formatted such that only instruction is done during class time and the work is done at the student's own shop. A tools class is typically a beginner class (or at least a beginner on the particular tool) teaching how to use a particular woodworking tool, e.g., table saw, router, CNC, scroll saw. There is a hands-on component for the students to exercise the skills being taught. This class is typically in one session.
A skills class is somewhat of a hybrid class and geared for more intermediate to advanced woodworkers to teach a particular aspect of woodworking that could be useful with their own projects. It may be taught as a single session or multiple class sessions. Many of them will require students to bring their own materials and may allow them to bring a project they are working on that utilizes the skills being taught, e.g., a class on drawer and cabinet joinery.
A demonstration class does not have a hands-on component. We do attempt to make all our classes hands-on but as we presently cannot have programs in our meeting space that produce too much dust, we are considering classes—that would be programs if not for this limitation—and that are demonstration only. It may be a specialized area or technique in woodworking, e.g., epoxy, angle-grinder, live edge. This would be a one session class.
Thank you so much for your interest and willingness to contribute to the DMWA’s education program. We will be in touch with you as to timing and to discuss additional details!
